The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is a national research body, subordinated to the Ministry of Education. It is a public non-profit body, with both national and international scope.
As a national institute for research and development in education, IES aims to put forth the education policies and decisions by the scientific studies and data, to analyse needs and issues of the educational system in Romania, to support the innovation and the reform of the national education system.
The organization is structured on 4 departments: Curriculum, Educational Policies, Theory of Education, Counselling & Educational Management and Youth research, where are employed around 50 researchers. IES coordinates the efforts related to the development and updating of the national curriculum and elaborates yearly a report regarding the state of the national education system. Recent researches address themes like: drop-out and truancy, resilience, violence in school, school-family partnerships, motivation for learning, instruments and methods in educational management.
For over two decades IES has been engaged in international projects with the aim of supporting the exchange of good practices and implementation of innovation in the Romanian educational system. IES has been host for many years to the Euroguidance and E-twinning networks in Romania. Through both Euroguidance and E-twinning national centres IES offers to the Romanian schools and school counselling network resources and professional development opportunities.
